The 2017 ReSAKSS conference will be held in the conference center of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Maputo,Mozambique:

The conference will begin with Side Events on Wednesday, October 25 at 8:30 am and is expected to conclude on Friday, October 27 at 6:30 pm.


The conference will be conducted in English, with simultaneous French and Portuguese translation.


Registration will take place on October 25 between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm at the conference site.


IFPRI and ReSAKSS nodes will cover the cost of the most economical round-trip fares for sponsored participants only. Based on flight availabilities, arrangements will be made for an arrival on Tuesday October 24 and a departure on Saturday, October 28. All other participants are responsible for arranging their own travel.


Please note that a passport with not less than 6 months of validity from the date of arrival and visa are required for entry into Mozambique for all non-citizens except:

  • Nationals from Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

Participants who require a visa to enter Mozambique must obtain this from the Mozambican embassy or consulate offices in their country of residence.

To obtain a visa, participants are requested to submit the following documentation to the nearest Mozambican Embassy or Consulate:

  1. Two (2) passport size photographs
  2. An invitation letter from the organizers of the meeting or conference
  3. Personal passport (valid for at least six months)
  4. Proof of yellow fever vaccination
  5. Appropriate fees (this may vary from country to country)
  6. Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation)
  7. Travel itinerary
  8. Any other supporting documentation depending on the home country’s travel policy

For citizens from countries without a Mozambican consular representation, visas may be issued at airports and land borders on arrival. To obtain their visas on arrival, travelers must present on entry:

  1. A passport with at least 6 months’ validity and several blank pages
  2. A return air ticket
  3. A confirmed hotel reservation
  4. Proof of yellow fever vaccination
  5. An invitation letter from the organizers of the meeting or conference
  6. Visa fees of $50 (single entry)


Visitors to Mozambique must show an official health certificate at airport immigration as proof of having been vaccinated against yellow fever. Travelers can be denied entry if they lack the proper documentation.


Sponsored participants will be accomodated on a bed and breakfast basis at the Radisson Blu and Polana Serena hotels. Please note that all bar/mini-bar bills, room service, use of hotel phone, and all other extra expenses will be covered by the participants themselves.

All other participants are invited to make a reservation at the hotel of their choice.

We have blocked a limited number of rooms at these hotels for non-sponsored participants. If you would like to take advantage of the negotiated conference rate please contact Miss Maybelle Bulan at (ReSAKSS2017Conference@cgiar.org) by Friday, September 27, at the latest. Please note that you will need to settle your bill in its entirety upon checking out.

Airport pick-up and drop-off have been arranged for conference participants as follows:

You will be met and greeted by a driver from a shuttle company who will be holding a placard saying “ReSAKSS Conference.” Drivers will be on standby at the airport around the clock and will depart the airport for the hotel(s) every 30 minutes.

Transport TO THE Conference VENUE

A free shuttle bus service will be provided between the Polana Serena Hotel and the Radisson Blu conference center. Buses will depart from the front of the hotel lobby at 8:00 am each morning and return after the conference concludes each day. There will be no shuttle service during lunch breaks.


Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided during the conference from October 25 to 27. A cocktail will be held at the conference venue on October 25, and a conference dinner will be offered to all participants at the Polana Serena Hotel in the evening of October 26th. Shuttle buses will drive participants to the dinner site and back to the Radisson Blu hotel. A small stipend will be given to sponsored participants to cover their meals during travel and non-conference days.


The currency in use in Mozambique is the Mozambican Meticais (MZN). The current, approximate, conversion rate for main currencies are $1 = 60 MZN and 1Euro = 70 MZN. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets. Maputo offers a good network of banking and foreign exchange services.


The average temperature in Maputo in October is fairly hot, and turns around 23 °C (73.4 °F). Afternoons can be very hot with average high temperatures reaching 28 °C (82.4 °F). Overnight temperatures are generally somewhat cool with an average low of 18 °C (64.4 °F).


In general, Maputo is a relatively safe city. Nonetheless, as with all major cities, discretion is advised. Participants are encouraged to take necessary precautions whenever they venture out. Street crimes, including mugging, purse-snatching, and pick-pocketing are common in Maputo and in secondary cities.

Participants are encouraged to come to Maputo with dual-band or tri-band mobile phones (900/1800/1900 MHZ). Participants can purchase a SIM card with pre-charged airtime for 50 MZN upon arrival.


Electricity in Mozambique is 220 Volts, alternating at 50 cycles per second. If you travel to Mozambique with a device that does not accept 220 Volts at 50 Hertz, you will need a voltage converter. More information can be found here https://www.power-plugssockets.com/mozambique/.  


Secretariat Room – This room will be located next to the main conference venue. Delegates may contact the conference staff for all their conference related requirements.

Paperless environment – Participants are encouraged to download and carry copies of any documents they wish to access at the conference. Paper copies of the final agenda only will be available at the venue.
