The 2018 ReSAKSS conference will be held in the Medium Conference Hall of the African Union Conference Center:

The conference will begin with side events on Wednesday, October 24 at 9:00 am and is expected to conclude on Friday, October 26 at 6:30 pm .


The conference will be conducted in English, with simultaneous French and Portuguese translation available during plenary sessions and some parallel sessions.


A registration and assistance desk will be settled in each hotel where sponsored participants will be accommodated (the Radisson Blu & Capital hotels). The hotel desks will be opened for registration on October 23 between 2PM and 8PM. Registration will also be available at the conference site on October 24 between 8:00 am and 3:00 pm.


IFPRI and the ReSAKSS Nodes will cover the cost of the most economical round-trip fares for sponsored participants only. Based on flight availabilities, arrangements will be made for an arrival on Tuesday October 23 and a departure on Saturday, October 27. All other participants are responsible for arranging their own travel.


Please note that a valid passport and visa are required for entry into Ethiopia for all non-citizens except Kenya and Djibouti nationals. All participants are responsible for obtaining their own visa. Travelers should obtain a visa from an Ethiopian Embassy or Consulate before departure. Citizens of certain countries may also retrieve a visa upon arrival at the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Holders of diplomatic or service/official passports as well as United Nations LPs will receive visas free of charge.

To apply for your visa, you will require:
• A completed visa application form.
• A current passport valid for at least six (6) months.
• One recent color passport sized photo.
• Visa fees (30 USD for a 30 days business visa).
• A round trip flight reservation.
• Your letter of invitation.


Visitors to Ethiopia must show an official health certificate at airport immigration as proof of having been vaccinated against yellow fever. Travelers can be denied entry if they lack the proper documentation.


Sponsored participants will be accommodated on a bed and breakfast basis at the Radisson Blu and Capital Hotels. Please note that all bar/mini-bar bills, room service, use of hotel phone as well as other extra expenses will have to be covered by the participants themselves.

All other participants are invited to make a reservation at the hotel of their choice.

We have blocked a limited number of rooms at these hotels for non-sponsored participants. If you would like to take advantage of the negotiated conference rate please contact Miss Maybelle Bulan at (ReSAKSS2018Conference@cgiar.org) by Monday, October 1, at the latest. Please note that you will need to settle your bill in its entirety upon checking out.

Airport pick-up and drop-off have been arranged for conference participants. Upon arrival at the Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa on October 23, you will be met and greeted by An Usher from the company, ETINCEL, in the arrival lobby, who will be holding a placard showing “ReSAKSS Conference”. Drivers and bus coordinators from ETINCEL will be on standby at the airport around the clock and will depart the airport for the hotel(s) every 30 minutes. In the unlikely event that you are not met at the airport, please call ETINCEL at +251 1912472892 and they will promptly organize your pick up. You can also call Mr. Aradom Taddesse from IFPRI at +251 911 711 032, for assistance.

Please note that for airport drop-off on October 27, shuttles will depart from the Radisson Blu and Capital Hotels. Departure times will be communicated at a later time.


There will be a free shuttle bus service provided between the Radisson Blu and Capital Hotels and the African Union Conference Center. Buses will depart from the lobbies of both hotels at 7:30 am each morning and return after the conference concludes each day. There will be no shuttle service during lunch breaks. Guests staying at other hotels can travel to the Radisson Blu and Capital Hotels to catch the bus to the African Union Conference Center or they can arrange their own transportation to the Conference Center.


Lunch and coffee breaks will be provided during the conference from October 24 to 26. A cocktail will be held at the conference venue on October 24, and a conference dinner will be offered to all participants at the Radisson Blu Hotel in the evening of October 25. Shuttle buses will drive participants to the dinner site. From the conference venue, and back to the Capital hotel.
A small stipend will be given to sponsored participants to cover their meals during travel and non-conference days.


The currency in use in Ethiopia is the Ethiopian Birr. Addis Ababa offers a good network of banking and foreign exchange services, including ATMs located in the Bole International Airport and the Radisson Blu, Jupiter International, Hilton and Sheraton hotels. Credit cards are wildly accepted at hotels and supermarkets.


During October, the average high temperature in Addis Ababa is 23°C (73°F) and the average low temperature is 9°C (48°F).


In general, Addis Ababa is a relatively safe city. Nonetheless, as with all major cities, discretion is advised. Participants are encouraged to take necessary precautions whenever they venture out.
Street crimes, including mugging, purse-snatching, and pick-pocketing are common in Addis Ababa and in secondary cities.

Participants are encouraged to come to Addis Ababa with dual-band or tri-band mobile phones (900/1800/1900 MHZ). Participants can buy an EthioTelecom SIM card with pre-charged airtime for US$10–20 upon arrival. Please note that any phone with a data plan (i.e. iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.) will not work in Ethiopia.


Ethiopia’s electrical current is 220–240 volts/50 cycles, so North American appliances will suffer damage if plugged in without a converter and/or adapter (two small round pins).


Secretariat Room – This room will be located next to the main conference venue. Delegates may contact the conference staff for all their conference related requirements.
Paperless environment – Participants are encouraged to download and carry copies of any documents they wish to access at the conference. Paper copies of the final agenda only will be available at the venue.
